...'BUT ONLY ONE THING TRULY MATTERS'

'and Jesus said to her. 'Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. but one thing is needed and Mary has chosen that good part which will not be taken away from her'- Luke (10:41-42)

One day, Jesus happened to be a guest at a woman's house named Martha and she had a sister named Mary. As expected and according to scripture, Martha set about attending to the Lord and got distracted with much serving. (Luke 10:40). One can imagine that she must have shuttled between the
kitchen and  backyard to fetch some vegetables and then back to the living room as she prepared the meal. However Mary on the other hand sat at the feet of Jesus listening to the teachings of the master and absorbing His words.

It got to a point that Martha protested; 'Lord do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? therefore tell her to help me' Luke (10:40). And Jesus answered and said to her; 'Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed and Mary has chosen that good part which will not be taken away from her' - Luke(10:41-42)

Dear Brethren, many of us today are like Martha. We are so preoccupied with our daily routine and the cares of this world, and this is normal. The world is also full of distractions and all manner of evil that can keep even some Christians from what truly matters...according to Jesus; 'the one thing that is needed'.

Dear brethren, the ONE THING that is needed is salvation that comes through the Word. And what  is the Word? The Bible says 'In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God and the Word was God' -John(1:1). The Word is Jesus Christ dear friends.

Mary refused to be distracted and listened to the Word from the master. We can be like Mary today by listening to Jesus and God through His written Word in the Bible. Jesus told His disciples and is also telling us; 'the words that I speak to you are Spirit and they are Life'- John (6:63). By accepting Jesus (the Word), we have also accepted Salvation( Life) because he has said; 'I am the way, the truth, and the Life' John(14:6)

Dear Friends, a human is made up of a physical body, spirit and soul. In order for a physical human body to survive and live, it must be nourished with physical food, else it dies. Likewise, we must remember that we also have a spirit and a soul. we must also nourish our spirit with spiritual food, else it starves and dies also. That Spiritual Food is Jesus Christ, the Word of God. That is why Jesus said; 'I am the Bread of Life' - John (6:48). He also said; 'I am the Living Bread which came down from Heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, He will live forever and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the Life of the world'  - (John 6:51)

Brethren, we can feed our spirits by studying the Word of God in the bible and abiding by it. When we do so and accept Christ, we partake of the Bread of Life. No one on the earth is too busy to eat food. Hence, just as we find the time to eat food daily; in the midst of our busy schedule, we also ought to create time in fellowship with God by studying His word daily.

We all hunger and thirst in our physical bodies. likewise, our spirits also hungers and thirsts and needs nourishment else it dies. we all have a genuine need for God whether we realize it or not for only He can truly satisfy. That is why the psalmist said; 'As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for you, O God, my soul thirsts for God, for the Living God' - Psalm (42:1-2)

Finally brethren, and ultimately. what we do with our physical bodies and spirit will determine where our souls will end up. Our souls which are eternal will one day give an account to God and testify of these things.

Like Mary; as we avoid the many distractions in the world today and feed daily on the Word of God even in the midst of our busy schedules (because we now know that the Word is the one thing that is truly needed). As we abide by this Word, it is my prayer that we obtain the promise of Salvation at that time and declare even like the psalmist; 'your Word has given me Life' - Psalm (119:50)
